A new pitch for Gremlins 3 has arrived. However, this isn't an ordinary pitch. This pitch for the third installment comes in the form of an 80s rock anthem, and it could be what gets the creative juices flowing for the movie to be made. The song in question comes to us from songsmith Nick Lutsko, who apparently has a lot of passion for the Gremlins franchise.
But the music never stopped. Granted, many of the songs below came from recording sessions that took place before the pandemic took hold. But unlike the movie industry, which went on near-complete lockdown, some of rock's biggest names forged ahead and released new music anyway.
These artists all took a big risk by releasing their work into such an uncertain situation and without the ability to promote it onstage, but they sure did make our year brighter. Below we survey the 20 Best Rock Songs of 2020, listed alphabetically by artist name.
Pre-coronavirus, one of the world's main worries was the spate of mass killings caused by guns, especially in the U.S. Drive-By Truckers take on the subject on the first of their two 2020 albums (the second arrived after COVID-19). Specifically, they lash out at politicians who offer no concrete solutions to the problem, only platitudes. \"Stick it up your ass with your useless thoughts and prayers,\" they sing.
After working with outside musicians on 2016's Alone, Chrissie Hynde brought founding Pretenders drummer Martin Chambers and longtime members James Walbourne and Nick Wilkinson back into the studio for Hate for Sale. The result was an exhilarating half-hour showcase of all the big and little things the Pretenders do so well. Hynde's voice remains a powerful and distinctive marvel, and the 10 songs she co-wrote with Walbourne offer a wide display of the group's range. The Bo-Diddley-beat-riding \"Didn't Want to Be This Lonely\" might be both the most immediate and most enduring of the bunch, punctuated by some dazzling rockabilly lead guitar.
It's hard to imagine how more pressure or scrutiny could have been placed on Wolfgang Van Halen's debut single. To start with, he's the son of Eddie Van Halen, one of the most innovative, influential and revered guitarists in rock history. On top of that, two years had passed since Wolfgang announced his album was completed. It turned out the record was delayed because he was helping to care for his ailing father, who died in October. A month later, he released his debut single, \"Distance,\" a tribute and farewell written during Eddie's health battle. It's a testament to Wolfgang's growing talent that he establishes himself with such a firm voice and independent style on this moving song.
The other day I was driving down the road and was listening to the classic rock station here in Charleston and all of a sudden the song \"Run to You\" by Bryan Adams came on the radio. Beleive it or not, Bryan Adams would record a disco song in the late 70s, before getting a band together and releasing the popular MTV song \"Cuts Like A Knife\" in 1983. In the fall of 1984, Bryan Adams would release the album Reckless, which would spawn several radio hits. While I was driving down the road, I found myself increasing the volume while \"Run to You\" and I thought to myself that this song still is quite the banger and really was one of the top 80s rock songs.
\"Run To You\" has the high octane of a lot of the stuff released in the early to mid 80s, but Bryan Adams and his band certainly were not in the hair band / metal category. Bryan Adams and his band were creating just straight up 80s rock without all the excess and glam of a lot of the music that was beginning to come out of Los Angeles by the mid 80s. As a professional wedding DJ with a focus and love on music, I found myself pulling up the You Tube of \"Run To You\" and watching the video, and reviewing the Billboard data on the song as well. When you were exposed to all these videos by growing up with MTV like I was, a video like this will take you back and make you think about the simpler times of the 80s. As a matter of fact, I dug deeper and found out the lovely lady in the video was Lysette Anthony. I posted about \"Run To You\" on Twitter as I do with a lot of my published posts and music commentary and tagged Lysette in the post and she retweeted. So, this one song I heard in one of the few times I got out in the car to run some errands during the COVID-19 pandemic got me to look back at some of the best 80s rock songs. As you have probably found out by looking over my blog, the possibilities are simply endless when it comes to YOUR wedding playlist. When planning the music for your wedding, you might consider a cocktail hour with some of the Best 80s Rock Songs That Weren't Recorded By A Hair Band.

\"Working For The Weekend\" Loverboy 1981Back in the fall of 1981, Canadian rock band Loverboy would release their album Get Lucky. \"Working For The Weekend\" was the first song to be released from the album and would peak at #2 on the Mainstream Rock chart.
\"New World Man\" Rush 1982Besides COVID-19, one of the other things that happened earlier in 2020 was the death of Rush drummer Neil Peart. \"New World Man\" was released in the summer of 1982 from the album Signals and would become a #1 song on the Billboard Top Tracks chart.
\"Owner Of A Lonely Heart\" Yes 1983We've now reached the progressive rock portion of this post. \"Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy\" Sammy Hagar 1982Before he would replace David Lee Roth in Van Halen in 1985, Sammy Hagar would have a solo career in the early 80s.
