This free laser engraver software offers all the standard drawing and shape tools and offers a range of object manipulation tools, such as transformations, z-order operations and alignment and distribution commands. It also offers node editing features, allowing you to precisely modify designs and easily troubleshoot problems with vectors. One of the best things about Inkscape is that it uses SVG (scalable vector graphics) as its native format. As the SVG graphics formatting markup language is royalty-free, you can use its commands to create your designs without any expense. Unlike LaserGRBL, the Inkscape free software for laser engraving is available on all major desktop platforms including Mac, Windows, and Linux.
The CNC laser engraver software allows you to arrange and edit vector shapes with the editor, and you can even create new shapes with the help of powerful features. These include offsetting, boolean operations, welding, and node editing. You can also adjust the power, speed, cut order, brightness & contrast, number of passes, and more while you engrave. LightBurn is an all-in-one laser engraving software, as it allows you to send your designs directly to your cutter, eliminating the need to use additional programs.LightBurn comes with a 30-day free trial you can use to try out the software. Another benefit of using LightBurn is the active support forum where you can get help with any issues and discuss topics with other users. There is also a news section on the LightBurn website that provides updates on developments and bug fixes.
Please note that LightBurn does not support the stock M2-Nano board in the popular K40 laser. This board does not offer control of power through software - we recommend upgrading the board to take full advantage of LightBurn.
CAD, which stands for Computer-Aided Design, is the CNC software that lets you draw your designs. There are many CAD software packages out there, but unfortunately, most of them are not free. Luckily there have been significant improvements in the free options over the past few years as 3D printing, which uses the same CAD program, has taken off.
A CNC router requires a computer and software to actually make it move and follow the g code files generated by your CAM software. Some CNC routers, particularly professional or industrial machines, have a built-in computer that runs the CNC control software.
GlowForge has a web-based software for which you gain access when you buy a laser cutter from them and which you use from your web browser. The problem with this is that the app itself is hosted on GlowForge servers so internet access is required for you to be able to use it.
Full Spectrum and Dremel also provide their software (Retina engrave and DigiLab) through a browser but the difference is that the app itself is hosted locally on the machine itself so you can use it even without an internet connection. You only need to have your PC and the machine on the same network.
Inkscape is quite powerful yet free and open-source vector drawing software used by many in the laser cutting community. Great community around this software helped create lots of useful extensions for lasers and there are also lots of tutorials for it including quite a good built-in interactive one.
These are options for Mac users. For those of you who already own a laser cutting machine the brand of the machine and type of the controller will in most cases determine which software you can use, but for others who are looking to get into this world, the choice of software can help steer them in the right direction.
Mach 3 is compatible with our electronic combo's that include the Parallel Breakout Board.Planet-CNC is compatible with our electronic combo's that included our USB Breakout Board. The parallel breakout board is compatible to a wide variety of software control packages. The USB interface board that we sell can only be used with the Planet-cnc control software. If you are concerned with your computer (desktop) not having a parallel port, one can be purchased and inserted into a PCI slot on the motherboard. Some motherboard also come with a parallel port header (connector) on the motherboard and a simple cable can be connected to this connector to get that functionality on the computer. The former solution of getting a parallel port adapter card to plug into the motherboard is probable the easiest and least expensive option.Additional Information:Additional Information:Is the mach 3 software compatible with kollmorgen s200 servo motors and controllers
Our Computer CNC-systems, come integrated with all the required electronics (motherboard, HDD, PSU). Only input devices(mouse, keyboard, monitor) and software are required to be purchased separately, to have a complete ready to go system. Here ( ) you can see the available option of including windows 7 to be installed with our computer system. You can use an external HDD or Flash-drive, to transfer data from your laptop/computer to the built in computer system.
SketchUcam will output gcode which standard CNC control software will typically interpret, execute and control CNC machines. So, there is no problem using SketchUcam. However, our CNC machine control software that use our CNC machine interface boards require Windows OS, of Linux. The Mach3 USB board will only run with Mach3 control software which runs under the Windows OS. The parallel breakout board can run under Windows or Linux OS and the computer must contain a parallel port.
Planet CNC is currently based in the UK as a independent company, and has a G-code wizard similar to the digitizing wizard in Mach 3. Although different software, you may download a demo here ( -cnc.com/index.phppage=download) (first link).
The USB controller will only work with the Planet-CNC software. This software is well made and will provide great functionality. The planet-cnc software delivers instructions to the microcontroller on the board and the microcontroller will send out the pulse trains needed to move the machine correctly. There are two main alternatives if you want to use the mach3 software: First, get a parallel port card and add it to your computer and get a parallel breakout board. If you have a laptop/notebook computer, this will not be possible. Second, if you have a laptop, or really want to use the USB as the main interface for controlling the machine, you will need to get the smoothstepper board which works with mach3. The price combination is much higher than the USB controller with planet-cnc, but will work with Mach3.Additional Information:Additional Information:Additional Information:The planet cnc controller can be prone to electrical interference and has been known to cause such problems. In the first instance try to use a quality double sheilded USB cable, hopefully this will fix your problem. Alternatively you may need to sheild your limit switch, estop and or motor cabling. My pick is that a quality USB cable will fix it though, worked for me.
If you take the standard parallel cable BoB (Break Out Board), then you will need control software (Mach 3 or EMC2) and CAM software to make your G-Code (such as CamBam). Personally I use CamBam and Mach 3, they work beautifully but don't expect to turn them on and know how they work out of the box. Give yourself a few weeks to get familiar with the basics. CamBam is VERY powerful software for it's price. I'm surprised how much I keep learning on what I can do with it...I highly recommend it if you want as much control as possible.Mach 3 + CamBam as a bundle costs $310. EMC2 will give you a free replacement for Mach 3 and is exclusively for Linux. If you use the USB BoB, it will cost an extra $75 + $75 for the software. This is an all-in-one package so no need for Mach 3 or CamBam.For etching rasters (jpeg, bmp, tiff, non-vectors, photos), I highly recommend PicEngrave. It has been a labor of love for the past 9 years and John has done a wonderful job with it. It easily compares in quality compared to software that is in the $200-$300 range. John's software runs $40 and can be found here: (don't let the modest website fool you, this stuff can do amazing things). DotG and the Mach3 engrave plugin are two other options and instructions can be found on Dustans page in the gallery on buildyourcnc.com website.
You will need a CNC software that will control your router cnc machine, and your design CAD/CAM software will need to know the CNC software you plan on using so the post processor in the CAM software can create the g-code for the CNC control software. So if you have for example, Mach 3 and our parallel breakout board, you can use the Mach 3 post processor in your design software.

The USB interfaces (The board shown at the link: -electronic-component-USB-Controller-Breakout) that we well is already updated with the firmware, and tested with the planet-cnc software. Simply install the planet-cnc software and plug in the USB interface and the software will communicate with the board.Additional Information:Windows 10 was not allowing the planet cnc software to install the proper drivers. Following the windows 8 reccomendations listed on the usb break out board page got the planet cnc and usb break out board communicating.
This kind of power is currently not achievable with diode technology, so you have to choose a CO2 laser machine. These machines are generally more expensive, larger, and more complex to use and most of them use their own control software.
