Surfing the Internet on a new, unfamiliar network can be risky. Microsoft and CloudFlare have teamed up to bring a built-in VPN to Edge to combat that risk and allow users to browse more securely.
When turned on, Edge Secure Network should encrypt users’ web traffic so internet service providers can’t collect browsing information you’d rather keep private, like, say, health-related searches or just plain bizarre queries.
“Secure Network helps you protect your information by masking your device’s IP address, encrypting your data, and routing it through a secure network (powered by Cloudflare) to a server that is geographically co-located so it’s harder for malicious actors to see your true location and what you’re doing. It also prevents your internet service provider from collecting your browsing data, like details about which websites you visit, and helps prevent online entities from using your IP address for profiling and sending you targeted ads,” the Edge team explained
For its part, CloudFlare states that it automatically deletes “all diagnostic and support data” after 25 hours. Microsoft says it stores only “minimal support data and access tokens which are only retained for the duration of the required service window.”
While the feature is still under development and not yet available for early testing either, Microsoft detailed how users could try out a preview. That suggests it could roll out soon to one of the Microsoft Edge Insider channels first, which users can download and join here.
