In conclusion, Portrait Pro 19 is a fantastic tool for any retoucher, as it is able to quickly and easily get you from the start of an image to about 85% complete with just a few clicks. I found that for fashion images and full-body shots, this was all I needed for retouching. However, for beauty portraits, like the ones seen in the majority of this article, it did need a little bit of extra work afterward, but overall, I found myself finishing images in far less time with equal or better results than my normal workflow.

It is simple yet incredibly powerful, and gives you pleasing results within seconds. However, it offers much more and encourages you to go back to the software and personalize your retouching.

For over a decade, PortraitPro (formerly Portrait Professional) has been popular with photographers looking to retouch their own images in-house. The easy to use interface makes it easy to customize nearly every part of your edit, making it ideal for everything from high-fashion to family portraits. PortraitPro 18 brought AI to the table, making for a significantly faster and more accurate editing experience. The latest offering, PortraitPro 19, was released in mid-October. So what can users expect from this new version?

Has anyone tried V19 and if so can you advise if it is worth the fairly pricey upgrade from 17 or 18....is it a major step forward of just a minor revision. I'm mainly interested in very light touch subtle portrait retouching very much avoiding the default settings.

Seriously, frequency separation is not difficult. Just pour yourself a coffee or a beer, sit down for an hour, learn it. Grab a couple of your images and practice it for speed; by image five you'll be flying. It's the best and most fundamental investment in technique you'll make in your portrait retouch workflow--and again, if you already have PS or Affinity, it's free.

I have used LR since LR 1, and to LR 6. I love the program. But certain types of edits are frustrating and cumbersome. They are not transparent tot he occasional user who might retouch photos a few times a month or year. For portraits, I am very impressed with the ease and depth of Portrait Pro. It makes the portrait retouching changes fun rather than frustrating.

Sorry, but you miss the point because you clearly have never used Portrait Pro. When I said the software is able to adjust light and shadows I specified that I was referring to the (apparent) DIRECTION of light in the portrait. I'm not talking lifting shadows, etc., as one can do in Photoshop. Rather, PP allows you to change the apparent position of the light source in the as if you are experimenting with different light setups.

The Studio Max version allows for batch processing and could save a ton of time for a busy portrait photographer. I wouldn't say it is a substitute for Photoshop, but a nice addition to it. I now use C1 for the raw conversions (best skintones), Photoshop for light retouching, and Portrait Pro to add finishing touches, and then look over everything in Bridge and adjust anything that still needs adjusting after that in Photoshop again.

I think that by now you'll be upgrading to version 21 not 19. Portrait Pro is very powerful but you must truly adjust the default settings to your personal preferences. Most users find the default settings stronger than they prefer. I suggest that you adjust the default settings in Portrait Pro to your liking and save those preferences to your personal defaults. I personally think that the upgrades have been very worthwhile if you shoot a lot of portraits.

PortraitPro comes in three versions: Standard ($44.95), Studio ($69.95), and Studio Max ($139.95). The Standard version is limited to JPG and 24-bit TIFF files, lacks batch editing, and does not integrate with editing software. The Studio version lets you work with raw or 48-bit files and has a basic batch dialog. Studio Max has full batch mode for the greatest efficiency. The hair tools are a simple set of tools that allow you to get the correct look and smooth appearance of hair which is key to a good portrait.
